Dental Implants

Dental implants consist of a metal construction of dental posts, implanted into the jawbone underneath the gum. Implants fuse to the jawbone, providing a support framework for artificial teeth implanted on the posts, and act as a replacement for the root of the tooth.
Dentists typically use implant surgery for replacing single missing teeth and for supporting bridges, crowns or dentures.

There are four Types of Dental Implants:

Endosteal

The endosteal implant is a metal structure consisting of screw or nail-like posts, buried within the jawbone. Titanium, ceramic or a combination of both makes up the construction of the posts.
Dentists only use endosteal implants where the jawbone is complete, strong and healthy. The posts play the role of the root of the tooth and have no adverse effect on the surrounding teeth.

Subperiosteal

In cases where the jawbone is not strong or is too thin to support an endosteal implant, a subperiosteal implant is used instead.
This type of implant consists of a metal frame affixed to the jawbone below the gum tissue with the metal posts going through the gum. The purpose of the metal band is to give the support that the jaw cannot give.

Ramus Frame

The ramus frame implant is a single metal rail attached to the lower jawbone under the gum tissue. The normal place of insertion is in the back of the mouth, near the wisdom teeth, or near to the chin.
Dentists normally recommend this type of implant for patients who have trouble with dentures. The top of the metal rail remains exposed through the gum and acts as a suitable anchor for dentures.

Risks Associated with Dental Implants

Dental implants carry a certain number of risks. There is always the chance that the implant may break – not just the prosthetic that the implant supports, but the post or structure within the jawbone itself. Another risk associated with the dental implant is infections, which is why your dentist will typically prescribe antibiotics. However, infections may still appear long after the implant was inserted. In order to reduce greatly the risk of infection, it is highly recommended to have good oral hygiene and to stop smoking.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Implants offer huge benefits. They improve your facial appearance and allow you to smile confidently. You’re also able to chew better. They are highly stable, can help to strengthen the jawbone and, perhaps more importantly to some, are a permanent solution.
