 Dolphin and Whale Tours

The Dolphin and Whale Tour departs from the Puerto Jiménez dock and will take you out into the Gulfo Dulce and over to the north-east coast of the bay. Some people call this side Jurassic Park, as there are massive sheer cliffs dropping right into the sea. In these waters you will see spinner, bottle nose, and spotted dolphins, which are residents to the Golfo Dulce. Most dolphin species are present year-round in the bay.

During the tour, you will search for humpback (during migration seasons), pilot whales and from Jan-March, you may see some whale sharks feeding on the plankton blooms.  Costa Rica’s most iconic and oft spotted whale, the humpback, spends more than eight months a year in these waters – the longest humpback whale season in the world! Humpback whale migration is typically from late July-October and again in December-March. The experience is everlasting and unforgettable and highly recommended by Tres Palmas.

The Capt.’s has cold water and fresh fruit for a lunch break on a deserted island somewhere in the Golfo Dulce.

Costa Rica is widely known for its year-round sport fishing. There are always great catches available in the local waters.  Your safety and fishing experience is our top priority. We are determined to ensure you have, both the best and the safest, fishing excursion possible. Our local fishing crews are well trained and have extensive experience of the local fishing waters.

We represent several boats and crews which gives us the ability to select a crew that will give you the best opportunity to catch a wide array of different fish species throughout the year. It also allows us to bid out their services for our guests. This ensures that not only you get a great price for your group but the proper charter based on what you are wanting to catch.

We listen closely to your needs and we provide your group an all-inclusive service to world renowned fishing. We will handle any additional accommodations and transportation you might need for your Fishing Safari.

We can provide you with safari packages from 4 to 12 hours charters but will be determined based on what you are looking to catch. The boat sizes range from 27-37 feet in length and go out about 20 miles and beyond and then start trolling north or south depending on where the fish are biting.

The Captain will be targeting mahi, yellowfin and black fin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and the occasional marlin. A cooler with ice, beverages and sandwiches are provided for you. You can bring your own beer should you desire.

The Costa Rica horseback riding trip begins at 8:30am at the entrance of Matapalo where the guide will explain the types of animals and birds you will see. He will take you through lush rainforest, over to some tidal pools where you can soak and relax then out on the beaches of Pan Dulce, Backwash and Matapalo and then taking you to the famous King Louie waterfalls where you will enjoy swimming in the falls.

Nature Tour

 
 
 Corcovado Day Hike

The Corcovado Day at La Tarde is an ecotourism project based at the top of the hills overlooking Corcovado National Park. It is about a two-hour drive from Tres Palmas. For those that don’t have time for multi-day tours, La Tarde is the perfect alternative.

The Tour is sponsored by biologist Mike Boston who has 19 years of experience guiding groups into the park. La Tarde is similar to Matapalo that boasts a very high biodiversity but there are some geographically distinct species that only can be seen at La Tarde.

The setting is stunning and the views are amazing from this elevated vantage point. It offers more than Corcovado could for the casual visitor. Eduardo Castro, the owner of the property also gives his Costa Rican perspective on land conservation.

This is a full day tour so bring comfortable hiking gear, sunscreen, water bottle and a hat or visor. The trip to Carate is not included. A taxi ride will cost $70 each way from the villa with a maximum passenger load of six.

The Osa Peninsula is a bird watchers paradise and home to over 360 bird species including the healthiest population of Scarlet Macaws in Central America. The lowland bird watch area offers birds such as manakins, contingas, honeycreepers, toucans, macaws, crested-eagle, harpy-eagle, warblers, plovers, sandpipers and vireos.

The rainforest bird watch area offers birds such as trogons, motmots, hummingbirds and many more. The Osa lies at the center of the South Central American Pacific slope, which birdlife international classifies as one of the most important endemic/bird areas in the world.

The tour location has primary rainforest, secondary forest, and coastal area. The tour begins at the entrance to Matapalo, where you can hike approximately 15 minutes to and meet the guide. Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and water bottle.

Kayaking Tour

There are two kayaking options, a daytime trip and an afternoon/night trip. The tour will take you through the local mangroves leading towards the sea, with a wide variety of aquatic, reptilian and bird life.

The trip takes you down the mangroves and towards the end of the tour you will jump over a dune with the kayaks and make the return portion of the trip back in the Golfo Dulce. Before departing, your experienced guide will give you a brief orientation about the boats and gear, and what to expect on your exploratory journey.

The rivers tides make it so that the best time to go is close to the high tide. Transportation not included.

Surf Lessons

For adults and children of all ages, just need to be able to swim. Lessons are given at Pan Dulce beach, which has a very mellow wave and are great for learners. The Playa Matapalo surf is a perfect background with scarlet macaws flying overhead and howler monkeys howling in the trees.

Longtime resident Olman Fernandez Cedeno, locally known as Pollo, has been surfing the Matapalo waves since he was 7 years old. He is a very enthusiastic instructor and will get his students up and riding in short order.

He states, on your first lesson you will learn to stand up and ride the wave. He and his instructors are CPR and First Aid certified. Group rates are $65 pp, private lessons are $110 pp, private family lessons for 4 or more is $75.

Paddle Boarding Tour

For adults and children alike of all ages, just need to be able to swim. The Costa Rica paddle boarding cruise begins at Pan Dulce beach and heads over to Back-Wash bay along the shoreline provided the waves are not up. Standing above the water allows for viewing of abundant marine animals, which may include dolphins, turtles, rays, fish and lots of sea birds.  

An excellent visual experience and you will get a physical workout at the same time. Best time for the cruise is at high tide when water is calmer, we can check and see when the tide will be good on the day you want to book.
